Getting started on the Wiki
Doku Wiki is easy to use, but there are some basic rules you need to know to get started.
Editing a page
Click the 'Edit this page' button. You will see the editing box, and you can simply edit the text just like you can in any normal text processing program. If you are adding a lot of text, we suggest you add all your plain text first. Once complete, you can return to the text to format it.
On an ordered page with headlined sections, like this one, each section will automatically be given its own 'edit' button. This saves download time and will improve editing speed.
Save or Preview? Important note.
Formatting your text
In the text editing box, text is not WYSIWYG. You will see extra control characters around some words that change the attributes of the text when displayed in the wiki. You can add many of these characters automatically by selecting text and clicking the appropriate icon, just like most programs, but you can also add them by simply typing them.
Creating a new page
To create a new page, you first create a new link on an existing wiki page. If you want to create a page called 'further explanation', you first edit an existing page, select the words 'further explanation', and click the 'link' icon. When you save your edited text, the highlighted words will appear in red. Clicking on this new link will open a blank page and you will have the option of editing that page, which will in future be the page called 'further explanation'.
Example: Create a new page called 'More info'. Select the words,
click the internal link icon. Save, then click on the new link.
Links
Creating an internal link
To link to an existing page, select the text you want to link, and click the 'link' icon. If a page with that name exists, then the link is displayed in green when you save your edits.
Example: To link to this wiki:get_started page, type the words 'wiki:get
started' (without the quotes or underline), select the words,
and click the link icon.
Important note: Before creating a new page, check that the subject matter does not already exist under a different name. Look in the index, or use the search facility.
Creating an external link
e.g. www.kon.org To link to an external page, you only need to format the URL correctly. If the URL starts with www. or http it will automatically be displayed as an external link when saved.
Example: To create a link to www.kon.org, just type it.
Making a plain text link
e.g. KON Type the full URL (with the preceding http://), then the | character, then the words to display for the link.
Example: To have the letters KON link to www.kon.org, type
http://www.kon.org|KON, select it, click the external link icon.
NameSpaces
NameSpaces are an important part of the functionality of the wiki. For example, if you refer a link to a person, then the format of the link should be people:personsName . If you refer to an organization, then it should be organizations:theirName
Read syntax on how NameSpaces works.
Current nameSpaces are 'people', 'organizations', 'definition', 'wiki', and 'playground'.
Example: To create a link to John Doe, use the format [[people:John Doe]] .
This will integrate that page with the 'people' nameSpace, and it will appear
in the index when you click the 'people' link.
Making a List
To make a list, indent your text by two spaces and use a * for unordered lists or a - for ordered ones.
- This is a list
- The second item
- You may have different levels
- Another item
- This is an ordered list
- The second item
- You may have different levels
- Another item
Add asterisks to create an unordered list, like this:
- This is an unordered list
- The second item
- You may have different levels
- Another item
or
- This is an ordered list
- The second item
- You may have different levels
- Another item
Making Headlines
Select your headline text, and click the appropriate headline icon. There are 5 levels of headlines. If you have more than 3 headline items on a page, a Table of Contents is automatically created for that page.
You can help!
If you find any of these instructions confusing or incorrect, you can edit this page to make them clearer! However, remember that this is a 'get you started' page, so please do not add more information than is necessary to this page. If you wish to add more detailed information, create a link from the appropriate section and add it to a new page, or refer the reader to the syntax page.
